Girls Trip to Kenya! Part 2

9/23/2022

We're continuing our Kenya Adventure from Part 1 of Girl's trip in Kenya!

Maasai Mara

Elewana Sand River Camp

We were greeted upon arrival at the airstrip to the Masai Mara National Reserve by our driver from the Elewana Sand River lodge.  After chatting with our driver over a welcome drink we drove by many animals before we arrived to the lodge.

Unfortunately, we were about two weeks too early to see the great migration from Tanzania (we were there the first week of June) but this also meant there were less tourist in the reserve.

The lodge is situated on a secluded and picturesque site along the Sand River which is close to the Tanzanian border. This was the most luxurious of the camps with interior fixtures and furnishings that made you felt that you were on a Safari in the heydays of the 1920’s.  The National Reserve of the Masai Mara is best known for its large concentrations of big cats like leopard, cheetah, and lion, as well as the annual migration of wildebeest, zebra, and antelope from the Serengeti into the Masa Mara.

In between the morning and evening game drives there was time to lounge around the pool and evening camp fire to fully enjoy the experience of being in Africa.  This site was unique since it is known for the animal migration, we were able to turn our morning game drive into a six-hour ride where our driver set up our breakfast next to the Landcruiser in the grasslands next to a herd of antelope.  We even skipped returning to the lodge for lunch one day to watch a large herd of about 1,000 zebras cross a river which is always perilous with the many crocodiles lounging in the water and a leopard waiting on the other side to take advantage of the chaos.

Mara Triangle Conservatory

After enjoying a morning game drive and a bush breakfast our driver drove us to the river separating the Maasai Mara and the triangle conservatory where we meet our new driver for the next two days from the Angama Mara lodge.  This lodge is situated on top of a mountain overlooking the plains and is properly named because Angama is inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air’.  With breath taking views this was a great lodge to finish our safari adventure at.   During our game drives the main thing we saw were prides of lions.  We had only seen one or two lions here or there throughout our stay in Kenya, so this was a real treat.  We were even able to experience and see three lioness stalk and hunt zebras successfully

At the end of our time in the Masai Mara we flew back into Nairobi in the morning to catch our late-night flight back home.  The Hemingway hotel welcomed us back for the day so we could relax by the pool, have an afternoon of lounging on the outside veranda while having English high tea service followed by a relaxing massage and spa treatment.  We finished our time in Nairobi on the second-floor bar of the Hemingway and we cheered to a great adventure and remembered all the great experiences we had in Kenya before we were driven to the airport to catch our flight back to New York.

Plan your next adventure!
