We decided to relax a bit after all the adventures we had so far, and spent the rest of our trip at the Chiemsee in a beautiful Bavarian style hotel in Prien/Stock which is right next to a lake. Chiemsee is the largest lake in Bavaria with a beautiful mountain panorama as a backdrop. Why is the Chiemsee such a great place to finish a Bavaria trip? Most kids love bicycling: There are many flat, easy for kids, bicycle routes around the lake and you can always stop for a swim or a Bavarian Brotzeit in one of the many beer gardens along the way. Most kids love to have fun in the water: You will find many great beaches around the lake, some even with a slide into the water and a playground. For a bad weather day head to Prienavera with an indoor/outdoor public pool. Most kids love boats and a steam train: The green 19th century steam train “Chiemseebahn” takes you within 10 minutes from Prien to the lake and back and is a delight for families. There also numerous activities to be experienced on the lake. You can sail a boat, kayak, row, paddle or rent an electrical boat. You can take one of the many ferries to one of the small islands on the lake such as Herrenchiemsee. Most kids love visiting a castle: You will need to take the ferry to Herrenchiemsee where King Ludwig II build the New Castle as a tribute to Versailles in France. You have to take a guided tour of the palace, however you can explore the large gardens, fountains and Grand canal outdoors on your own. Pro-Tip: Chiemsee is an easy trip from Munich on the train in the case you don’t want to rent a car. That brings our 7-day Bavarian family adventure to an end.
